CINCINNATI -- The Cardinals have set their pitching rotation for the upcoming weekend, and it appears they've settled on a lineup for the coming days and weeks as well.
Manager Tony La Russa said on Monday morning that Jaime Garcia will make his 2010 debut on Sunday night in Milwaukee, rather than in the Saturday afternoon game at Miller Park. Chris Carpenter, Monday's Opening Day starter, will start on regular rest in Saturday's game. La Russa has said that the decision as to when to start Garcia would come down to matchups later in the month.
As for the lineup, the one the Cardinals trotted out on Monday will likely make a few more appearances. La Russa likes Brendan Ryan in the No. 2 spot in the order. He likes splitting up the right-handed heart of his order, with Colby Rasmus in the fifth spot. And he has no problem with David Freese's power potential being down in the No. 8 position. Catcher Yadier Molina hit seventh on Monday.
"Molina's a better hitter," La Russa said. "And Freese has got more speed. ... Sometimes it takes the bat out of his hands. If Brendan struggles, we could always move somebody into the second spot and Freese could move up to sixth or seventh."
