Four GCL hurlers combine on no-hitter

Right-hander Frederis Parra combined with three relievers -- Silas Bohannan, Andrew Reidt and Kevin Alexander -- for a no-hitter on Wednesday, and the Rookie-level Cardinals defeated the Nationals, 6-1, in the Gulf Coast League.

Parra began the game with 2 2/3 hitless innings, but his wildness allowed the Nationals to score a run. He walked the leadoff batter in the third inning, and that runner scored on a fielder's choice with the help of a balk (Parra's second of the game) and a wild pitch.

Parra finished his outing with one strikeout and three walks before Bohannan entered in relief. Bohannan went 2 1/3 innings before passing the baton to Reidt and Alexander, each of whom struck out two and walked one in two innings. Alexander induced a double play in the ninth to complete the no-hitter.

This no-hitter came just four days after the Cardinals were no-hit by the Marlins. The offense had no problem on Wednesday, pounding out 14 hits, led by center fielder Magneuris Sierra, who went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs, two stolen bases and three RBIs.

Although Parra ranks fifth in the GCL with a 2.45 ERA, neither he nor any of the three relievers in Wednesday's game are heralded as top prospects. Parra was a low-profile member of the Cardinals' 2012 international signing class; Bohannan, Reidt and Alexander all joined the organization as non-drafted free agents this summer.

After Wednesday, however, each has a no-hitter on his resume.
