Since 2002, the Cardinals and Indians have pulled off 10 midseason deals, including Wednesday's. They've been big and small -- five coming within a week of the Deadline -- but the two teams clearly enjoy working together on the trade front.
Last season, the Cardinals sent reliever Marc Rzepczynski to Cleveland for infield prospect Juan Herrera. Four years ago, they pulled off one of the largest-scale deals in their history together, with Cleveland receiving Corey Kluber from the Padres, St. Louis receiving Jake Westbrook from the Indians and Nick Greenwood from the Padres, and the Padres receiving Ryan Ludwick from the Cardinals on the day of the Deadline.
That also came a year after the Indians sent veteran Mark DeRosa to the Cardinals for eventual two-time All-Star closer Chris Perez and Jess Todd.
"I think it's just the case of aligning on the right values at the right time," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said. "The last two years, that's happened to be the case with the Cardinals."
