ST. LOUIS -- A challenge not won by Cardinals manager Mike Matheny worked in the Cards' favor on Tuesday night, when Matt Holliday followed a contested foul ball in the sixth inning with a 424-foot solo homer to pull the Cardinals to within four runs of the Rays.
Matheny, now 2-13 when challenging this season, asked the umpiring crew to review first-base umpire Dan Bellino's foul call on a ball Holliday dropped near the right-field line. A 1-minute, 42-second review confirmed the ruling, forcing Holliday to return to the plate.
He would have had a single had the call been overturned. Instead, he smashed a homer, his eighth of the season, to make it 6-2 off Rays starter Jake Odorizzi.
