SAN FRANCISCO -- Mike Matheny unsuccessfully challenged Hunter Pence's infield single in the fifth, dropping the Cardinals manager to 2-10 in plays that he has challenged this season.
Pence was called safe by first-base umpire Dana DeMuth as the Giants' right fielder scampered to beat out a throw from shortstop Jhonny Peralta. The infield single extended the inning and advanced Gregor Blanco into scoring position with two outs and the Cardinals leading the Giants, 5-1.
With an insufficient amount of evidence to overturn the ruling, crew chief DeMuth signaled that the call would stand after a two-minute, 16-second review. Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez walked the next batter before getting out of the inning by striking out Buster Posey with the bases full.
Matheny currently has the worst replay success rate in the Majors.
"I'm real comfortable with the fact that, in my mind, this isn't a measurement of my [managerial] success," Matheny said. "I'm going to keep fighting for my guys when we have an opportunity. For whatever reason, if it doesn't work out in our favor, I'm going to keep swinging. If I'm going to ask [the players] to keep fighting, I've got to."
