ST. LOUIS, Mo., May 20, 2014 - The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that right-handed pitcher Jason Motte (right elbow) has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and will be part of the team's 25-man active roster for tonight's (7:15 p.m. CDT) series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The team optioned left-handed pitcher Sam Freeman to Memphis (AAA) following Sunday's game, opening up a roster spot for Motte's return.

Motte, 31, last pitched for the Cardinals during the 2012 postseason and was forced to miss the entire 2013 season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery last May. Motte, who in 2012 was the National League co-leader in saves (42), is 17-13 with a 2.87 ERA and 54 saves in his 282 career games pitched.

Motte appeared in a combined six games (6.2 IP) during his injury rehabilitation stint with Springfield (AA) and Memphis (AAA) and did not allow a run.
