The St. Louis Cardinals announced today from Baseball's Winter Meetings that the team has signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Angel Castro to a one-year contract for the upcoming 2014 season.

Castro, 31, has spent seven seasons in the minors since being drafted by Detroit in 2006 and has also played in the Mexican League (2010-11) and Japanese Pacific League (2012).

Castro was 8-5 last season with a 3.48 ERA in 25 games (19 games started) for Albuquerque, the Los Angeles Dodgers triple-A affiliate. He also pitched for the Dominican Republic in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

The 5-11, 200-pound Dominican native is currently pitching for Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League and is leading the league with a 1.29 ERA in eight starts, posting a 4-3 mark.
