Ankiel, who has started only two games since July 7, is 2-for-28 in July and is batting just .215 on the season. Team trainers have cleared Ankiel to play regardless of the pending results of the MRI.
"He got an MRI today and we're waiting for the results," said manager Tony La Russa. "He's available to play. He's just not 100 percent."
Ankiel was hitting .247 with two home runs and 11 RBIs when he collided with the outfield wall on May 4. He returned from the disabled list on May 24, and has hit only .197 with 11 RBIs and three home runs in 44 games since.
Results of the MRI were expected sometime before the end of the day on Saturday. Ankiel was not in St. Louis' lineup vs Arizona ace Dan Haren.
