ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals recalled right-handed reliever Fernando Salas on Tuesday to fill the roster spot vacated by Tyler Lyons, who was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
Salas, 28, tossed 11 innings of relief for Memphis this month, tallying eight saves and posting a 1.64 ERA. The 28-year-old has bounced between the Minors and the big leagues the last four seasons, appearing in 19 games for the Cardinals this year with an 0-2 record and a 4.79 ERA through 20 2/3 innings.
Salas said Tuesday he hadn't yet been told how he would be used, but he has primarily served as a middle reliever this season. He provides a fresh option out of the 'pen with September callups still a few days away.
"It's different in the Minor Leagues than here, but I feel good is what's important," Salas said. "Just be ready in every situation, and you never know."
