Cards grab prep catcher Rodriguez in Round 14

The Cardinals made Elier Rodriguez their first catcher selected in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, taking him in the 14th round with the 425th overall pick.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound switch-hitting prep prospect from Immaculata-LaSalle High School in Miami committed to Barry University as a junior in 2012. He hit .485 with five homers and 30 RBIs this past high-school season.

"He's a guy that I think was a little bit under the radar," scouting director Dan Kantrovitz said. "Has some power from both sides of the plate. He's gonna be a fun one to keep an eye on."
