The St. Louis Cardinals have optioned pitcher Mitchell Boggs to Memphis (AAA) today and purchased right-handed pitcher Keith Bulter from Springfield (AA). Butler will be available for tonight's game and wear uniform #65.
Butler, 24, had made 13 appearances fro Springfield where he had allowed just one run over 13.2 innings of work. Opponents were hitting just .163 against him as he allowed just eight hits during those games, walking only two while fanning 21. His 0.66 ERA was leading the Double-A Cardinals pitching staff among those with more than one appearance.
Butler was selected in the 24th round (729th player overall) of the June 2009 free-agent draft. The 6-0, 170-pound Kentucky native will become the ninth rookie pitcher, 11th rookie overall to appear on the Cardinals roster this season, and is the 11th pitcher age 25 or younger to pitch for the club. The Cardinals have received a Major League-leading 13 wins from rookie pitchers this season.
Boggs, who was optioned to Memphis on May 2 and recalled on May 19, had appeared in four games for St. Louis since his return, allowing four runs (3ER) in 4.0 IP.
