Cardinals place RHP Jake Westbrook on 15-Day DL

The St. Louis Cardinals will place right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 9, with right elbow inflammation. Left-handed pitcher John Gast will be purchased from Memphis (AAA) on Tuesday and will start against the New York Mets. Jason Motte will be moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Gast.

Westbrook was 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA over seven starts for the Cardinals in 2013 and led the National League in ERA after the month of April.

Gast, the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for April, is currently 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA over six starts in Memphis. The sixth-round draft pick out of Florida State University in the 2010 draft, began the season with a 32.0 consecutive scoreless inning streak.
