Matheny unveils Cardinals' Opening Day lineup

PHOENIX -- After a team workout at Chase Field on Sunday, manager Mike Matheny unveiled his Opening Day lineup, which features six position players drafted and developed by the Cardinals.

Center fielder Jon Jay will hit lead off, followed by Matt Carpenter (3B), Matt Holliday (LF), Allen Craig (1B), Carlos Beltran (RF), Yadier Molina (C), Daniel Descalso (2B), Pete Kozma (SS) and starting pitcher Adam Wainwright. With third baseman David Freese sidelined with a back injury, Matheny dropped Beltran from the No. 2 hole into the middle of the lineup.

"We feel real good about what we're throwing out there," Matheny said. "It's not just patchwork. That speaks to the depth of the organization. I'd say certainly we're deeper than last year ... but with the things that have happened, it's challenged that. But we still have pretty good depth."

The Cardinals start the season without Freese and projected starting shortstop Rafael Furcal, who is out for the season after undergoing elbow surgery. Starter Chris Carpenter and closer Jason Motte are also on the disabled list.

Of the position players who will start on Monday, only Holliday and Beltran don't fit into the category of homegrown talent. Wainwright was not drafted by the Cardinals either, though he was acquired by the organization when he was still a Minor League pitcher.
