Freese to miss series finale with ankle sprain
ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis third baseman David Freese sustained a mild sprain of his left ankle in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Milwaukee and will sit out Sunday's series finale.

Freese said he, "jammed it a little," following a single in the sixth inning.

X-Rays were negative.

"I came out of the box and just jammed it," Freese said. "Everything is in tact, but it kind of blew up. It's swollen."

Freese slapped a leadoff single in the sixth and stayed in the game momentarily. The next batter, Skip Schumaker, grounded into a double play. Freese played the next inning and was then replaced in the lineup by Pete Kozma to start the eighth.

"His ankle swelled up, kind of tightened up," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "He's going to be day to day."

Freese, who finished 2-for-3, is hitting .299 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs. The Most Valuable Player of last year's World Series says he expects to be back in the lineup on Monday when the Cardinals open a seven-game road trip at San Diego.

"I got it looked at and everything is fine," Freese said. "It's frustrating, just one of those things."

Freese missed three games after being hit on the wrist by a pitch on Aug. 24.
