Flores to undergo shoulder surgery

Flores to undergo shoulder surgery

ST. LOUIS -- Randy Flores is getting a head start on being healthy and ready to go for the 2009 season.

The Cardinals' left-handed reliever will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Thursday to allay discomfort caused by a small cyst and fraying of the labrum in his left shoulder. Flores had undergone an MRI exam on Monday.

Team physician George Paletta will perform the procedure. Flores last pitched on Sept. 14 in Pittsburgh, when he allowed one run on one hit in one-third of an inning. Flores had one save and 16 holds this year. He was 1-0 with a 5.26 ERA in 43 games.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak anticipates Flores being fully ready for Spring Training.

"I never heard that was in peril at all," Mozeliak said.
