Teams that are within 5 1/2 games of a postseason berth were included, so the Cardinals, who are 4 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the National League Wild Card race, were among the eight NL teams involved.
Additional coin tosses will be held if they become necessary over the rest of the regular season.
In St. Louis' case, the Cardinals would host the Brewers and Astros at Busch Stadium in a potential one-game tiebreaker to determine the NL Wild Card if the Cardinals end the regular season tied with either of those teams. But if the Cardinals tie the Phillies for the Wild Card, they would play in Philadelphia for a one-game tiebreaker.
If two teams from the same division are tied but both are assured of participating in the postseason, then the first tiebreaker to determine which team is the division champion and which team is the Wild Card would be their season-series record. The second tiebreaker is the divisional record.
