ST. LOUIS, Mo, May 26, 2012 - St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled rookie right-handed reliever Chuckie Fick from Memphis (AAA) and optioned pitcher Fernando Salas to the Triple-A club. Fick is expected to be in uniform (#44) for tonight's game against Philadelphia.
Fick, 26, was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and two saves in a team-leading 21 games (21.0 IP) for the Redbirds this season. He ranked first among all Triple-A pitchers, and 2nd in all of minor league baseball, with his 16 Holds for Memphis last season. His 2.30 ERA in 2011 was the 4th best of any Triple-A relief pitcher with 50 or more appearances.
The 6-5, 187-pound California native was the Cardinals 15th round (472nd player overall) selection in the June 2007 amateur draft out of Cal State-Northridge. He is the son of long time Cardinals scout Chuck Fick, and the nephew of former major leaguer Robert Fick.
Salas, who led the Cardinals in saves (24) last season, was 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in 18 appearances to begin the 2012 season.
Fick will make his Major League debut with his first game appearance and he becomes the 32nd player to appear on the Cardinals roster this season.
