Cardinals DL Berkman; Purchase Adams from Memphis

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have placed first baseman Lance Berkman on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee injury and have purchased the contract of Matt Adams from Memphis (AAA).  Adams, the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year and the Texas League (AA) Player of the Year in 2011, will be making his Major League debut with his first game appearance.

Adams, 23, was batting .340 (48-for-141) with a team-high 9 home runs and 27 RBI in his 37 games at Memphis and ranked among Pacific Coast League leaders in slugging pct. (.603-6th) and OPS (.978-10th).   His .340 batting mark stands 12th in the PCL and his 9 HR's ranked T5th.

The left-handed hitting Adams was batting .379 (39-for-103) with 8 of his 9 homers coming against right-handed pitchers.  He was batting .370 (10-for-27) with runners in scoring position and .361 (22-for-61) with 5 home runs and 16 RBI during May.  He hit a pair of homers and had a season-high 5 RBI on Friday (May 18) at Las Vegas.

The 6-3, 230-pound Adams was the Cardinals 23rd round (699th player overall) draft selection in 2009 out of Slippery Rock (Pa.) University.   He will be assigned uniform #53.

Berkman is taking his second stint on the DL this season, having been sidelined April 19 to May 12 with a left calf strain.
