Shortstop Cesar Izturis was removed from St. Louis' game against Boston at Fenway Park with what the team called a strained right hamstring. Izturis was replaced at short and in the leadoff spot by Brendan Ryan.
St. Louis was already playing short-handed on the offensive side, with only 12 hitters on the active roster. Additionally, Yadier Molina, the team's starting catcher, is available only to hit while he continues his recovery from a concussion. Molina started at designated hitter on Friday.
If Izturis has to go on the disabled list, the Cardinals have a number of middle-infield options for a callup, though none is optimal. Brian Barden is having a fine year at Triple-A Memphis, and D'Angelo Jimenez has significant Major League success, but neither is on the 40-man roster. Jarrett Hoffpauir is also having a solid year and is on the 40-man, but is likely limited to second base.
The Cardinals have nine players currently on the disabled list, eight of them pitchers.
