BOSTON -- The Cardinals made an expected move to deepen their bullpen on Friday, optioning Brad Thompson to Triple-A Memphis while recalling Mike Parisi from Memphis. Parisi becomes the eighth reliever on a 13-man pitching staff.
Friday's game marks the beginning of a 10-day, nine-game, three-city Interleague road trip. The Cardinals customarily add an extra pitcher for Interleague road games, since fewer pinch-hitters are needed when the pitcher does not bat.
Thompson pitched well in his start on Thursday, but he was only filling in for the injured Anthony Reyes, who in turn was filling in for the injured Todd Wellemeyer. Parisi will serve as the club's primary long reliever, a role he filled quite ably in his previous -- and first -- stint in the Major Leagues.
Parisi has pitched eight games in relief for St. Louis, posting a 2.87 ERA in 15 2/3 innings. He recorded 10 strikeouts and five walks out of the bullpen.
