Craig nearing Minor League rehab assignment
ST. LOUIS -- Allen Craig resumed playing in extended spring training games on Wednesday and has a chance, general manager John Mozeliak said, of beginning an official Minor League rehab assignment by the weekend.

A position player can remain on a rehab assignment for a maximum of 20 days. Craig's participation in extended spring games does not count against that clock.

At this point, Craig (right knee surgery) is only hitting in these games. He's expected to add the defensive side in early next week.

In other injury news:

• Scott Linebrink (right shoulder capsulitis) is still days away from taking the next step in his rehab program, which would be to pitch off a mound. His throwing work right now continues to be on flat ground.

• The status of Chris Carpenter (nerve irritation) remains unchanged. He continues to work through strengthening exercises without a set date as to when he will be able to begin throwing again.
