Matchup, not soreness, sitting Ankiel
ST. LOUIS -- Rick Ankiel was still sporting a nasty scrape on his left hand on Monday, and the Cardinals outfielder was not in the starting lineup for the finale of a four-game series against the Pirates. However, manager Tony La Russa said those two facts were unrelated.
La Russa trotted out an all-right-handed outfield against Pirates left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, who has a drastic left-right split this year. Right-handed batters are hitting .295 and slugging .541 against Gorzelanny, while lefties are at .250 and .344.
So the starting St. Louis outfield consisted of Joe Mather, Ryan Ludwick and Brian Barton, with Ankiel and Skip Schumaker sitting on the bench. However, La Russa asserted that Ankiel was not physically limited.
Ankiel sustained some scrapes and bruises when he made a dazzling diving catch at the warning track in Sunday's win over Pittsburgh. He remained in the game.
