Pineiro attempted to throw off the mound before the game to see what kind of progress he has made. But his injured right groin hurt too much, and he was not able to throw. Instead, Pineiro received further treatment.
The Cardinals placed Pineiro on the disabled list on Wednesday, retroactive to May 21, the day he strained his right groin. The day after Pineiro made his most recent start, he was jogging in the outfield while warming up and felt a tweak in his groin soon after.
In the second game of the series against the Pirates this weekend, one that Pineiro was originally slated to start, rookie Mike Parisi took his place on the mound. It is unclear if Pineiro's injury will limit him from making his next scheduled start, or if Parisi will stay in the rotation for the time being. Pineiro is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday.
Pineiro posted a record of 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA and 23 strikeouts before heading to the DL. His injury came after what he said was his best start of the year -- when he allowed three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Padres on May 20.
