SAN FRANCISCO -- As is often the case, last hired turned out to be first fired. Though he pitched well in his brief stint with the Cardinals, Kelvin Jimenez was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday to make room on the Major League roster for Joel Pineiro. Jimenez spent eight days on the big league roster, having been called up when Russ Springer was placed on the DL on April 5. Pineiro was activated to make the Sunday start against the Giants at AT&T Park. Brad Thompson, who had been starting in Pineiro's place, has been moved to the bullpen. Pineiro sustained a muscle strain below his shoulder, in the lat muscle, during Spring Training.
Jimenez, 27, made three appearances for the Cardinals. He allowed a run on three hits in three innings, striking out one and walking one. He was the last pitcher cut in Spring Training, when the Cardinals chose to keep Anthony Reyes on the roster over Jimenez.
