Cardinals at the plate: Juan Gonzalez, who is attempting to return to the Majors for the first time since 2005, had two singles to give him a .333 (8-for-24) Grapefruit League batting average. Brian Barton, who has 10 hits in his last 19 at-bats, had a single and an eighth-inning RBI groundout.

Braves at the plate: Jordan Schafer's first-inning leadoff double put him in position to score the game's first run on a Mark Kotsay RBI single. Javy Lopez hit his second homer of the year with one out in the seventh inning off Chris Perez.

Cardinals on the mound: Starter Adam Wainwright surrendered three hits in Atlanta's two-run first inning and then allowed just two more hits over his final four scoreless innings. Cliff Politte issued one walk in a scoreless frame.

Braves on the mound: Starter Jair Jurrjens moved another step toward clinching a spot in the rotation by limiting the Cardinals to one hit in four scoreless innings. Ryan Drese surrendered three hits over two scoreless innings.

Grapefruit League records: Cardinals 5-8, Braves 8-5.

Up next: Todd Wellemeyer, one of the candidates for a spot in the rotation, will start against Baltimore and Daniel Cabrera when the Cardinals host the Orioles in a 12:05 p.m. CT game at Roger Dean Stadium. Also scheduled to pitch for St. Louis are Brad Thompson, Ron Villone and Kelvin Jimenez.
