ST. LOUIS -- Former Cardinals pitcher Blaine Boyer was released by Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
The Redbirds needed to free a roster spot for catcher Tony Cruz, who was optioned to Memphis on Friday after the Cards signed reliever Arthur Rhodes.
Boyer, 29, started four games for Memphis and was 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA. He allowed five homers and walked nine over 16 innings. He appeared in 15 games with St. Louis in 2009 and had a 4.41 ERA in 16 1/3 innings.
