Lucas among cuts as Cardinals' trim roster

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Right-hander Josh Lucas was among several players the Cardinals reassigned over the last two days, but according to manager Mike Matheny, Lucas' future appears bright.

Lucas was reassigned to Minor League camp along with lefty Zach Phillips on Sunday. In addition, right-hander Rowan Wick and outfielder Anthony Garcia were optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

Following Monday night's 12-6 win over the Astros at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, the Cards announced three more transactions, reassigning outfielder Todd Cunningham and catcher Gabriel Lino to Minor League camp, while optioning infielder Breyvic Valera to Memphis.

The transactions reduced the number of players in Major League camp to 44, including 12 non-roster invitees.

Lucas did not allow a run in five innings of work, spanning five games. He gave up just two hits while striking out three and walking one.

"He had a great camp," Matheny said. "He made some advancements in his demeanor on the mound. I like his stuff. He's a little bit funky, a little different arm angle. He's going to be tough on right-handers.

"Every time he [pitched], I said, 'This guy looks like he belongs here.' So he's just going to have to go get some work and consistency."
