With injuries to pitchers, Baker in Cards' camp

Club voids non-roster invitee Flores' contract; Reyes has Tommy John surgery

With injuries to pitchers, Baker in Cards' camp

JUPITER, Fla. -- Injuries and a suspension have already sidelined three Cardinals pitchers in camp -- which is why, on Thursday, the club added another.

Corey Baker, 27, has moved into the Major League clubhouse and will take uniform No. 75. That jersey was slated to go to Corey Littrell before MLB announced that Littrell had been suspended 50 games for submitting a positive drug test.

Baker split last season between the Cards' Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. He posted a 5.68 ERA, 1.585 WHIP and struck out 110 over 130 innings.

Baker will pitch for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic, so he's already further along in his throwing program than most pitchers. That will serve the Cardinals well when they need innings coverage early in Grapefruit League play.

The Cardinals also announced Thursday they voided the contract of non-roster invitee Kendry Flores. Flores, who signed a Minor League deal in November, did not pass his physical and was therefore not cleared to pitch.

Flores, 25, made eight big league appearances with the Marlins in 2015-16, posting a 4.02 ERA in 15 2/3 innings.

Reyes undergoes surgery
The recovery starts now for top Cards prospect Alex Reyes, who underwent Tommy John surgery in Florida on Thursday. Head team physician Dr. George Paletta performed the procedure.

Reyes is expected to need at least one year to complete his rehab, and that process can be longer for some pitchers. The Cardinals are hopeful that the timing of this surgery will allow Reyes to be ready for the start of the 2018 season.

Equipment changes
The Cardinals are sporting a new three-dimensional logo on their batting helmets this season. That logo -- which still interlocks the famed "STL" -- is made of rubber and features a dark background and white script overlay.

According to a member of the clubhouse staff, the idea to incorporate the raised logo came from seeing a similar one used on the Dodgers' batting helmets.

Some of those helmets will also have an added feature, as at least three position players have requested that a face guard be added to theirs. Those include Aledmys Diaz and Yadier Molina, both of whom have hit with a face guard before, as well as Kolten Wong.

Worth noting
Lance Lynn returned to camp Thursday after being excused for a family funeral. He is scheduled to throw his first side session of camp Friday.

• With one day remaining before the team's first full-squad workout, few position players stopped by the complex Thursday. Jedd Gyorko did show up and took advantage of individualized infield work with coaches. Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk also made appearances.
