DENVER -- Two brutal losses at Coors Field notwithstanding, the Cardinals bullpen has been a strength this year. Even so, there's always room for added depth. So manager Tony La Russa said Thursday that he's pleased with two recent Minor League additions by the St. Louis organization.
On Wednesday the Cardinals signed right-hander Mike MacDougal, a former All-Star with the Royals and the closer for the Nationals for parts of the 2009 season. That followed the addition of lefty Renyel Pinto, formerly of the Marlins. Both are relieving for Triple-A Memphis.
"[MacDougal] has got a dynamite arm," La Russa said. "I never liked to see him come in a game. We got a couple of interesting guys, him and Pinto. Those guys have talent, if they're healthy."
Neither is likely to be making his way to St. Louis soon, but both are intriguing additions offering additional depth should the big league relievers falter or get hurt.
